Hemant is a visionary who always offers simple solutions to complex problems. His contribution towards inclusive infrastructure development in the country has been nonpareil. Many of his ideas were first of its kind and created new business sectors. Hemant is a Trustee of Kanoria Foundation which under its umbrella has entities with a total asset base of USD 12 billion (around Rs 78,000 crore). The group is at the vanguard of thought leadership in the country, especially in the area of infrastructure development and financing. Kanoria Foundation has been investing in business enterprises and with its harvest, has been engaging in many social impact initiatives.
Hemant is the Chairman and Managing Director of Srei, which started its operations in 1989. The initiative marked the entry of private sector in the field of infrastructure, a domain hitherto restricted to public sector. Over the last three decades, Srei has developed into one of India's largest holistic infrastructure institutions with USD 6.6 billion (around Rs 43,000 crore) of consolidated assets under management. Hemant is known for unleashing a new wave of rural entrepreneurship in India.
A unique business model under the brand 'Sahajl was created to bridge the urban-rural digital divide Kanoria Foundation WORK WITH DEVOTION and make services like e-governance, e-commerce and e-learning accessible to millions in remote geographies. The initiative has opened up revenue opportunities for thousands of village level entrepreneurs (VLEs) who are providing these services through IT-enabled Sahaj service centres across India. He is also the Chairman of India Power Corporation Limited, previously known as DPSC Limited. Under his guidance and leadership India Power has become one of the leading integrated power utilities in the country. The company has a diversified portfolio, with renewable and conventional modes of power generation, distribution and power trading. Hemant has over three decades of experience. He is currently serving as Board Member in the Indian Institute of Information Technology (Guwahati), Neotia University and New Delhi Institute of Management. He is a Member of the India-Russia CEOs Council.
He is a Member of the Advisory Committee of Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy and also a Member of Council of Advisors of Friends of Kolkata. He has held several prestigious positions like President of Calcutta Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the FICCI National Committee on Infrastructure and also served on the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C).
